Communications strategies for government professions

Client: Government Skills

Government Skills is the national sector skills council for central and local government.

During 2009 Jo was asked to help the organisation develop communications strategies and corporate identities for two major professional programmes: the Policy and Operational Delivery professions.

Although the two professions share similar stakeholders across central government, there is a distinct difference in audience between the policy profession and those working in operational delivery functions such as call centres and processing departments.

Jo worked closely with both teams to develop clear, targetted communications strategies for each profession. As well as key messages, audiences and tactics the strategies also included detailed stakeholder maps and a fully costed implementation plan.

At Government Skills request, Jo also commissioned and developed discrete but complementary visual identities for the two professions, with an appropriate tone of voice for each audience, and she also managed a major presentation by the Policy Profession team at the national Civil Service Live event.

Government Skills Head of Communications Viv Shaw said:

"We needed some help for two teams with different communications challenges. Jo came in and 'got it' immediately... Both teams were delighted with the results."
